About Me

Dr. Shanéa Thomas, LICSW, CSE, is a bold lecturer, seasoned scholar–practitioner, TEDx Speaker, and AASECT’s 2024 Sexuality Educator of the Year, who has more than 20 years of professional clinical social work experience in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Dr. Thomas’ main commitment in the field is training and strategizing with social workers, educators, and service providers to build safer therapeutic, educational, and workplace spaces for all people. Dr. Thomas has facilitated over 120 workshops centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion; grief and loss; mental health; sex and gender; and LGBTQIA+ populations.Dr. Thomas ended a 10-year tenure as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Southern California School of Social Work in 2022 to further his commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusivity at the University of Maryland School of Public Health, where he served as the LGBTQ+ Training Specialist and Assistant Clinical Research Professor. Dr. Thomas also served as Executive Director of Accreditation at the Council on Social Work Education before fully investing in Thomas Consulting and Therapeutic Services.Dr. Thomas’ current book based on their dissertation from University of Southern California Rossier School of Education, Accountable Care and Identity Camaraderie for Transgender and Queer Service Providers: Preventing Burnout (Bloomsbury Academic, July 2026), centers the experiences of those who hold marginalized identities within community work, with recommendations to organizations on how to uplift their work environments to prevent burnout and encourage longevity. Dr. Thomas currently serves as a peer-reviewer Journal of Humanistic Psychology and Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group (Mental Health), with writing alsofeatured in Encyclopedia of Sex and Sexuality: Understanding biology, psychology, and culture (Armstrong, 2021), NASW's 13th Edition of Social Work Speaks (2024), Open Access Government (2023) and the Journal of Humanistic Psychology (2022).Check out current features in Hope+Wellth (Winter 2026) and The Parlor (2026).
